Cards on sale
We often hear, or even enthusiastically exclaim ourselves, "He did it just like in that movie!" or "You look just like that actress!" Our fascination with cinema often matches our passion for board games, which is quite an achievement.
We’ve recently been browsing trivia about famous movie props. And, whether you know it or not, we have a bit to say on this topic ourselves. But first, let the one who didn’t run around as a kid with a stick, making that signature “vwoom” sound while slicing through an imaginary Darth Vader, cast the first stone. Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber and Han Solo’s blaster are perhaps the most iconic props from Star Wars. When they hit the auction block, collectors drove their prices sky-high. If you didn’t have the equivalent of a million zlotys, you weren’t even allowed into the auction hall to avoid making a fool of yourself.
A low-flying stone from a nearby aisle reminded us that women love movies too. The iconic little black dress worn by the divine Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s fetched nearly a million... dollars. But that’s not the final word on dresses. Everyone knows the famous photo of Marilyn Monroe standing—supposedly by accident—over a subway grate as steam billows up. That legendary dress sold for a jaw-dropping $4.6 million. Seeing such prices makes us wonder why there aren’t more board games about fashion design or running a clothing business. Releasing expansions with new collections from famous brands seems like a genius idea.
What about the famous agent of Her Majesty’s Secret Service? On his next mission, he might have to walk since the legendary Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger found a new owner for over $4 million. Let’s move from the 1960s to more modern Bond adventures. In 2006, the franchise underwent a bit of a shake-up—and it wasn’t just because a blond was cast as Bond. In Casino Royale, the first of the “new” Bonds, 007 had to defeat Le Chiffre, the terrorists’ banker, in a high-stakes poker tournament. Much of the film takes place in the casino, with all the poker-related props provided by Cartamundi. The good news? You don’t need a suitcase full of dollars to play cards like James Bond. High-quality cards and chips (which clink just like in the movies) are within arm’s reach. So, we suggest starting to practice your martini-shaking skills today.
Ringo Starr of The Beatles fame recently auctioned off a Rickenbacker Rose-Morris guitar from 1964, gifted to him by his bandmate John Lennon. The charity raised almost a million dollars from the sale, but it wasn’t the most expensive guitar in the world. Starr also had the first edition of the White Album and the first drum kit featuring the band’s logo. It seems good old rock and roll is alive and well, so wouldn’t it be great to have a music-themed game? We’re not talking about traditional cards with musicians’ faces—those are a dime a dozen—but a collectible card game where you form bands using the best (and worst!) stars of the stage. After all, why shouldn’t Louis Armstrong play Open’er alongside Kurt Cobain?
